Qualitative Interviews

Between the summer of 2022 and the summer of 2023, the Shift Project conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with a sub-set of Shift Project survey respondents. We recruited qualitative participants from our existing pool of workers who had previously taken the Shift Project survey and agreed to be contacted for further research opportunities. We selected participants based on their employer, as self-reported via a previous Qualtrics survey. We specifically chose heterogenous companies, selecting for high and low incidence of technology in the workplace and high and low reported job quality.

We interviewed 102 service sector workers, capturing over 130 hours of in-depth conversations.

This work has informed subsequent survey data collection on a variety of topics as well as resulted in presentations, papers, and works-in-progress on the role of service workers in their communities, negotiating disability at work, transportation insecurity, and worker resistance and compliance to employer demands.
