The Shift Project at ASA 2024

Aug 9, 2024

Shift participated in the ASA 2024 Annual Meeting held from August 9-12, 2024, in Montreal, Quebec, where our researchers presented the following papers:

Disguise, Dispute, or Disrupt: Negotiating Disability at Work

Esperanza Padilla and Kristen S. Harknett

This paper draws on in-depth interviews with 30 service sector workers navigating disability and workplace demands. All but a lucky few—with unusually supportive managers—faced barriers to accessing basic workplace accommodations.

Third Places, Precarious Spaces: The Role of Service Workers in Privatizing and Democratizing Public-Private Establishments

Rebecca Wolfe and Dylan Nguyen

Drawing on new qualitative data from the Shift Project, this paper demonstrates how service workers contribute to making their stores financially and socially accessible to community members—often in the face of corporate constraints.

Fissuring and Control: Surveillance and Franchising in Fast Food

Jeremy Mopsick and Daniel Schneider

Using Shift Project data on workplace surveillance combined with data scraped from Franchise Disclosure Documents, this paper provides rare empirical evidence that corporate fissuring increases workplace monitoring.
