September 2024 Shift Monthly Meeting: Nayun Eom & Danny Schneider

Sep 25, 2024

On September 25th, 2024, the Shift Project community gathered to learn about Nayun Eom and Danny Schneider’s research on AI and service sector work.

Guest Speaker

Nayun Eom is a doctoral student in Sociology at Harvard University. She is broadly interested in the impact of A.I. and automation on the future of work, particularly in the care work sector.

Danny Schneider is the Malcolm Wiener Professor of Social Policy at HKS and Professor of Sociology in FAS at Harvard University. He is co-director of The Shift Project. His research is at the intersection of inequality, labor, social demography, and social policy.

Nayun and Dany presented their research, titled “A.I. and Service Sector Work: Task Displacement and Labor Control.” They presented the first descriptive evidence on workers’ perceived exposure to different types of A.I. in the service sector across occupations and workplace types. Their study suggests that overall, A.I. in low-wage occupations is more commonly associated with processes of labor control, rather than task-displacement or -augmentation of workers.
