On January 30, 2023, the Shift Project community gathered for the first monthly meeting of the spring semester to hear from Naomi F. Sugie, Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society (and by courtesy, the Department of Sociology) at UC Irvine, and Annette Gailliot, a doctoral student in Sociology at UC Berkeley.
Naomi and Annette presented their paper, “Ban the Box and Related Fair Chance Hiring Laws,” in which they use Shift Project data to explore:
- Whether Ban the Box laws are associated with differences in the likelihood of service-sector workers at large firms having a criminal record.
- Whether the presence of such laws—and the existence of criminal records—are associated with variations in job quality.
They also examine how employer pledges to follow Fair Chance Hiring principles relate to these outcomes.
