Kirstin Krusell

Shift Alumni Kirstin Krusell is a PhD candidate in sociology at UC Berkeley. Kirstin’s research is united by an interest in risk and uncertainty—from how risk is felt at an everyday level to its political economy. Previously she has studied how labor unions are navigating the challenges of AI and automation in the workplace, and her current research examines the increasing popularity of “prepping” (survivalism) across the American political spectrum. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies and Center for Right-Wing Studies. Véronique Irwin

Shift Alumni Véronique received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.She is an Education Research Analyst at the National Center for Education Statistics where she oversees the development of an annual report on the condition and progress of education in the United States, spanning early childhood through postsecondary education. Anthony Rainey

Shift Alumni Anthony is a quantitative sociologist specializing in the areas of workplaces, organizations, and labor market institutions. He has published research related to workplace bullying and rising between-workplace income inequalities. Prior to joining the Institute,he was a postdoctoral researcher at Shift. Anthony received his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He received his bachelor’s of science from Sam Houston State University. Robert Pickett

Shift Alumni Robert is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Cash Transfer Lab in the Department of Sociology at New York University where he works on statistical approaches to identify the causal effects of the Alaskan Permanent Fund Dividend. He received my PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in the Departments of Demography and Sociology. His work explores the interplay between quantitative methods and constructionist race theory. During his PhD he worked as a student researcher for Shift. Email: rpickett@nyu.edu  

Katerine Perez

Shift Alumni Katerine is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology at Columbia University. Her broader research interests include higher education, racial identity, demography, and class inequality. More specifically, she is interested in the experiences of Latino/a/x students during and post higher education. Prior to attending Columbia, she worked as a researcher in the Department of Demography at UC Berkeley. Michael Obuchi

Shift Alumni Michael is an attorney at Cleary Gottlieb, where he has specialized in capital markets transactions since 2022. He holds a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and a B.A. from the same institution. Alison Gemmill

Shift Alumni Alison is a demographer and perinatal epidemiologist whose research aims to improve the health of women, birthing people, and their children. Paul Chung

Shift Alumni Paul is a Ph.D. graduate of the University of California, Berkeley in the Departments of Sociology and Demography. His research leverages the latest advances in formal demographic and statistical methodologies to gain new purchase on old questions about the family: its configurations, transformations, and meanings. Dani Carrillo

Shift Alumni Dani is a trained sociologist who has dedicated the past decade to researching people’s experiences navigating the medical and social safety net systems in California, with a special focus on Spanish-speaking and undocumented immigrant populations.
