Early Effects of California’s $20 Fast Food Minimum Wage

Oct 9, 2024

The Shift Project published a brief on the early effects of California’s fast-food minimum wage increase. Contrary to some employers’ concerns about potential higher prices, fewer workers, and reduced benefits, our report showed that many of the state’s fast-food workers experienced a significant wage boost with no negative impact on staffing, scheduling, or benefits. This report received substantial media coverage, including acknowledgment from Governor Gavin Newsom’s Press Office, and was especially timely with the Fast-Food Council’s upcoming meeting on minimum wage increases.
